The short version

OpenLens was never a separate product — it was a way to get signed binaries of the Lens open-source core. With that core no longer being updated, the choice is between a fork that carries the same interface forward and a different client altogether.

Where OpenLens still wins

  • The interface you already know. If your fingers know where everything is, that has real value a feature table will not show.
  • Extensions. The Lens extension API and the catalogue built around it. Kubeterm has no equivalent — though extensions are increasingly unmaintained now that the core is frozen.
  • Fully open source. MIT-licensed builds of open code, which matters if that is a requirement rather than a preference.

Where Kubeterm wins

  • It is still being built. Regular releases, a public issue tracker, and a roadmap.
  • AI-assisted troubleshooting. The assistant reads manifests, events, and logs from the live cluster to explain a failure, with a permission policy you set — read-only by default.
  • GitOps without extensions. Argo CD and Flux CD status read straight from the cluster API, alongside Helm releases and an Artifact Hub browser.
  • Mobile. iOS and Android apps with the same core workflows.

Move to Freelens if keeping the Lens experience matters most and you want open source.

Is OpenLens dead?
The OpenLens build repository states that Lens closed its source code and that no further updates should be expected. The existing builds still run, but they are frozen — which is the reason most OpenLens users are now evaluating alternatives.
