Choosing a Kubernetes client

What is the best free Kubernetes GUI?
Kubeterm, Freelens, and Headlamp are all free on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Freelens and Headlamp are open source; Kubeterm adds a built-in AI assistant, native Argo CD and Flux CD support, and iOS and Android apps. k9s is free too if you prefer a terminal UI. Lens and Aptakube are commercial.
What is the best alternative to Lens?
If you want to keep the Lens interface, Freelens is the actively maintained MIT-licensed fork of the same core. If you are open to a different client, Kubeterm is free on desktop with no account, Headlamp is a Kubernetes SIG project that also runs in-cluster, and Aptakube is a paid option built around multi-cluster views.
Which Kubernetes client works on a phone?
Kubeterm has iOS and Android apps covering the same core workflows as the desktop client, including log streaming, container terminals, and AI-assisted investigation. Lens, Freelens, OpenLens, Headlamp, k9s, and Aptakube are desktop or terminal only.
Do these tools need anything installed in my cluster?
Kubeterm, Lens, Freelens, OpenLens, k9s, and Aptakube all connect directly to the Kubernetes API from your machine using your existing kubeconfig. Headlamp can run the same way as a desktop app, and can also be deployed inside the cluster as a shared web UI.
